Gospel Artist Spotlight
Jason Champion (Brooks Entertainment Group/EMI Gospel)
On the title track of Jason Champion's solo gospel release Reflections, he doesn't claim to be famous or the best or greatest at his craft. Instead the Cleveland, Ohio native owns his destiny and purpose which is to sing God's praises. As most gospel artists, Champion's road to creating Reflectionsbegan in church, however the R&B group New Edition inspired him to pursue a career in music. After attending a New Edition concert with his friend David Tolliver, they formed a group and began performing together. With the assistance of Gerald Levert, the duo became Men at Large and produced two successful R&B albums. After the second album, Champion stepped away from the group and eventually connected with Gospel trailblazer Kirk Franklin, who he'd met early in his recording career. He contributed to Franklin's Hero release in 2005 and toured with him for two years. When he returned from the road, Champion's former Men at Large road manager, Leonard Brooks of Brooks Entertainment Group contacted him to offer an opportunity to begin a career as a solo gospel artist. Soon after, the Grammy nominated album Reflectionsdistributed by EMI Gospel was born with production and writers credits that read as a who's who list in the gospel community. The foundation was laid by Warryn Campbell (whom he met during his time touring with Franklin), who produced two of the elevenReflections album tracks. Material was contributed by Eric Dawkins, Gerald Haddon and Erica Campbell, who co-produced with her husband Warryn and lends vocals to the lead single "Always". My favorite song is the title track Reflections, which states in the hook "when I look in the mirror, here's what I see, I see the Savior looking at me/ When I look in the mirror, I don't see me/ I see the purpose, I see destiny." His journey to createReflections was long and cumbersome, but the Grammy nomination is confirmation that he's arrived at his destination right on time. The Grammy nomination is a light at the end of the tunnel for Champion, but it's only the beginning of a long career in which he intends to uplift and encourage through song. "I embrace the thought and potential of giving people hope in what seems to be a time when it seems like hope is a lost commodity." Champion has found his purpose and destiny and hopefully when he looks in the mirror in February he'll see the Reflection of a Grammy Award Winning Artist for a job well done with his first Gospel solo album Reflections.
"Jason Champion is like water in a dry land. As you listen, drink and enjoy." ~ Kirk Franklin~
